Semipalatinsk is the most eminent city of Kazakhstan and Government Semipalatinsk State Medical University is situated at Abai Street - the heart of Semipalatinsk. It is stretched on a vast and wide area.

It was founded as Semipalatinsk State Medical University on 2nd September, 1952. The University during the period of its existence has prepared more than twenty thousand highly qualified Doctors and Specialists, who offer their services not only in Kazakhstan and CIS countries, but also in the foreign countries like USA, Germany, Australia, Japan and many other countries. At present in the General Medicine, Pediatrics, Stomatological, Pharmaceutical and Medico-prophylactics and Medio-prophylactics faculties there are more than 3500 students enrolled. Significant scientific and clinical cadre potential has been concentrated for the well quality teaching including 35 Doctor's of Sciences, 158 PhD's. 1 Academician of AS RK, 3 Corresponding members of the AMS RK and 4 corresponding members of the ANS RK.

Foreign Students Department
In 1995, an additional administration for the foreign students was established, controlled by two pro-rectors and headed by the dean of the foreign students. The English medium section of the University was opened with efforts of the authorities of the University and International Education Centre. Thus Semipalatinsk State Medical University became the first government medical institution in the Central Asian Republics where the studies are being carried out successfully in English medium besides the traditional Russian and local languages. This is one of the prominent reasons that most of the foreign students are keen to get admitted in the university.

International Education Centre has been devotedly giving services to the students keeping in mind national interest and is respected all over the world in the field of education. IEC was given best performance award in 1999 because of its services in Kazakhstan.

University has established the methodical study complexes in English language in the concerned departments and a sufficient quality of literature in English language was purchased which gets replenished every year. Every possibility is made for the foreign students, for their studies in English medium, their stay, medical aid, recreations and travel to and within the country. A separate hostel in the center of campus with a canteen, primary medical care center and currency exchange facilities are being provided to the foreign students for their stay.

Preparatory section for the foreign students is functioning under the Foreign Student's Department where the students besides Russian language learn the concerned subjects for their preparation to the entrance examinations. Presently more than 500 foreign students from different countries like China, India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sudan, Japan, USA, France, Belgium and other countries study in various faculties of the University. The University has a good set-up for the foreign students and work in close contact with the Ministry of Education, Ministry of Health, and Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Home Ministry of the Republic of Kazakhstan and the embassies and the counsular offices of the Republic in the respective countries. Presently GSSMU is known as one of the leading institutions of the country for the number of foreign students in it.

Aims & Teaching Techniques
The main task of GSSMU is the preparation of highly qualified doctors and specialists. The deans of departments are in close co-ordination with by the Education Council & the Central Methodical Council (CMC). For the discussion of the Academic council and CMC, cardinal questions, determining changes of teaching methods, carrying out of level knowledge's new methods, questions about new methods' introduction of students' teaching; introduction questions about achievement of medicine and practice in the educational process' perfection of forms and teaching methods in the reviewing of examination materials; manuscripts, text books, educational - methodical material's discussion for determination of their readiness to the publication, are submitted. The educational process is based on definite traditions, developed during many years and became a foundation to the modern science and technology for the preparation of highly qualified doctors and specialists.
